Yama Niyama - a 6hr course

  • Merchant City Yoga 49 Virginia Court Glasgow, Scotland, G1 1TE United Kingdom (map)

We know that yoga is different from other fitness modalities. Even if the only thing you do is make shapes on a mat or do a bit of breathing practice, there’s an effect that is deeper than going for a run or playing football.

There’s more to it because in the tradition, yoga isn’t understood as something that you ‘do’ for two hours in the day - you’re striving to be a yogi - which means that your whole life is your practice.

When you start to look into the tradition you can see that the practices we have now - making shapes, moving, breathing, concentrating -  they come from a tradition which is a lot broader and is actually underpinned by ethics and ethical principles.

These ethical principles are the Yama and Niyama - and according to Patañjali in his Yoga Sūtras, that’s where our practice should begin. More than that - they inform the rest of our practice and actually advise how we should undertake the other branches of the 8-limbed path. The Yama - Niyama not only tell us how to practise, they are tools to live better here and now!

For a brief introduction into the yama-niyama check out the video below:

If you’d like to know how the Yama and Niyama can improve your life and your practice, join me on this 3-part course unpacking the Yama-Niyama and how they fit into our lives on and off the mat.

Over three Sunday afternoons we will dive deep into all of the yama niyama, their traditional origins and how they remain relevant today.
This course, like all my philosophy explorations, will be lively and community-driven, a space for discussion and sharing. You will understand the traditional origins of the yamas and niyamas but also, and more importantly, how they apply to a modern way of living. These in-person sessions will be deepened and supported by take-away practice for personal inquiry and practical exercises for daily life.

Course Cost £79
(Drop In £29 - please note there’s no clear split in the material between each session)
